I have little doubt that if Kerry's "concession" were more popular among Democratic activists, John Edwards would have made sure to say that he was all for it, and that it was the right thing to do, done at the right time, and in the right way. A successful politician like Edwards always covers all his bases. He's looking ahead.

And if Kerry's strategy is to fight behind the scenes while publicly "conceding," (an act which carries no legal weight) then I certainly believe that's a more effective strategy than refusing to concede right off the bat, which would have a created a shitstorm of negative publicity that would have buried any chance of turning general public opinion in Kerry's favor.
