President Bush's popularity in Iowa has sunk to the lowest level of his presidency, with 58 percent of adults frowning on his job performance.

A new Des Moines Register poll shows that disapproval of the Republican incumbent runs a gamut of issues — from his handling of the federal budget and the economy to the situation in Iraq and the federal government's hurricane response.

The proportion of Iowans who applaud Bush's overall job performance has skidded from a peak of 84 percent in the fall of 2001, when a nation traumatized by terrorist attacks rallied around the president, to 38 percent in the latest Iowa Poll, taken Nov. 28 to Dec. 1.

<snip>

Bush has his work cut out for him. In Iowa, 29 percent of the state's adults think the nation is headed in the right direction. They are far outnumbered by the 63 percent who believe the country is on the wrong track. The rest are unsure.
