I can't imagine Jeffords wasn't directly promised no Democratic opponent before his switch if he had chosen to run again. That would be 2001. As for the latest, this was pubicly discussed when Jeffords announced his retirement. Sanders will caucus with Democrats in return for not having a Democratic opponent and endorsing the Democrat running for his Congressional seat. That fits in with a 50 state strategy by giving us a better shot at winning both seats. We are leading prohibitively for the Senate seat and have a very slight lead in the House race.
