Even Bernie Sanders would be centre-left in most Europaean countries.

There may be some far-left groups; but they don't have any power. Whereas there are plenty of right-wing fanatics in politics, starting with Bush and Cheney; and the terrifying 'Christian Right' groups seem to have huge influence on the voters.
