9. I doubt if most Americans would sit through a true debate
in the style of the Lincoln-Douglas debates. No questions from reporters--and hours on each topic. If you've ever watched a re-enactment of a debate or a speech of the time (I saw the Cooper Union Speech re-enacted a couple years back), you'll realize that the way they constructed their arguments back then takes a lot more time than what they do now. No sound bites--but a lot of intricate prose and logic woven together. When you realize that the Lincoln-Douglas debates took place outdoors with the audience standing the whole time, you have to marvel at the patience and stamina of our forefathers.
