5. Don't worry too much
A lot of people here seem to think the sky is falling but you should be ok.

The gay marriage bill was more of a kneejerk political reaction to what was happening in the US at the time and I don't think is symptomatic of any broader agenda on gay rights. In fact I think that same bill also freed up access for same-sex couples to their partner's life insurance/superannuation etc

Without knowing the exact nature of that type of visa, generally once you have applied for it even if the rules do change there will be transitionary arrangements so that people who have already applied will carry through the process.
