From a Washington for Change email:
The Republicans think they can do to us what they did to the country in the 2000 elections.
With only 42 votes separating Christine Gregoire from the Republican candidate, they think we should just give up and let them take the office of governor, no matter how the public actually voted. We won't let them get away with it.
That's why we are about to embark on a hand count of votes in the Governor's race. Our State Democratic Party will announce on Friday the extent of the vote to be recounted - we anticipate a state-wide recount.
Howard Dean and others are helping this effort and 1000s of contributions are being made.
Here on the ground volunteers are urgently needed to help the Democrats oversee the recounting. I think you would benefit from the experience and I'm asking you to step up and lend a hand.
Observers will be needed in every county of the state. You will be asked for only a couple hours of your time, or longer if possible.
Could a hand recount find errors? Yes. Out of nearly 3 million votes cast 42 votes is a difference of only .000014. The margin of error for voting machines is somewhere between 1 and 2 percent, or 1,000 times as great as the vote difference.
We know that there were many errors in the machine recount: in some cases the machine recount yielded totals in the governor's race that do not match the number of voters who cast ballots; in some places the provisional ballots were not counted completely; and in others the discrepancy between the first count and the machine recount is so large that a hand recount must be done to reconcile differences.
State law provides for a hand recount in situations like this and the law should be followed. Please consider being part of this effort.
To volunteer please email count@wa-democrats.org or call (206) 328- 2969, ext. 133.
The stakes are high and we will have to work together to ensure that every vote is counted. I'm confident that when the votes are counted, we will see that the people of Washington wanted a Democrat to hold the office of governor.
Please volunteer now by emailing count@wa-democrats.org.
Thank you,
Karen Marchioro,
