National Day of Mourning, 1/20/05

Thursday, December 2, 2004

January 20th, 2005 will be a National Day of Mourning for American Democracy. If George W. Bush is sworn in on that day for a second Presidential term, it will represent a Grave Blow to the core Values of our Democracy. It will be a day of great sadness for at least half the nation. In observance of this day,

Wear traditional symbols of mourning—black clothes, black armbands, black ribbons on the lapel. If you are able, fly an American flag at half staff.
Take funeral leave, bereavement leave or sick leave from work on January 20th. If challenged to name your ailment, call it Democracy Flu. If you take funeral or bereavement leave, you may say that your Uncle Sam has died.
Use the day to participate in collective Acts of Mourning with others. March in funerary Processions. Use Coffins and Shrouds to symbolize the sad nature of our demonstration. Conduct mock interments of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights to symbolize the loss we have endured. Build and burn a funeral pyre for an effigy of Uncle Sam.
Be sure to acknowledge and to Mourn the brave Souls—Marines, Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen—who, under the wrongheaded Policies and incompetent Management of this Administration, have given up their lives in honorable service to their Country.
If you have occasion to participate in a Procession or Demonstration, engage in traditional symbolic acts of Mourning. Practice coordinated Wailing and Ululation. Sing Funeral hymns and offer mourning chants and Prayers. Wear over-garments of sack-cloth. Mark your face with ashes. Rend and tear your garments. Scatter ashes along the path of the procession.
The purpose of these acts shall be to express our Deep Sadness over the results of the Election and the Consequences we believe a second Bush term will have for the Safety and Welfare of the Nation. When enough of us participate, we can deflect attention from the Coronation in Washington. When we make our show of Grief without anger, violence or the appearance of Riot, we will lead our fellow citizens to understand the Gravity of the Situation we face.

Please join us in mourning on January 20th, and invite others to join you.
