During the primary wars, I stuck it out here because I've been here awhile (it's almost a habit!) even though it was a toxic environment for people who didn't support Obama. I couldn't support him after he kicked off his hate tour of southern evangelical churches on our backs. He literally used the climate of hate and division fostered by the republicans over the past 30 years to kick off his campaign. The right wing has used us queers as their way to fire up their so-called base. Well, Obama stepped in and used them too. I didn't think I could forgive that, but I ended up voting for him, even though I vowed I wouldn't. I've never sat out an election in 20 years of voting. It just felt wrong. Boy howdy, do I feel stupid now.

Rick Warren is insult piled on top of injury. And the attitudes here on this supposedly liberal site are just more kicks while we are down.

Right on the heels of proposition 8 - which the wonderful christian, Rick Warren, was a very vocal proponent of. But religion is an acceptable vehicle for hate when wielded against us queers. If Rick Warren were preaching that god divided the continents and split the races among them, therefore segregation was just (something preachers did during the civil rights movement and people actually believed) he would be completely discredited. If he preached that slavery was AOK because it's biblical, he would be laughed out of public life. But because he preaches hate against us queers, it's perfectly acceptable - even to a lot of the folk here at DU.

Do you people not get how hurtful this is, or do you just not give a shit. Hell, some of you probably agree with him. But you know what? We're here and we're sure as shit not going anywhere. We're a natural part of the human race, even though Warren and his brethren think we're the devil's own.

Do people not get that people like Rick Warren are the ones who egg on their congregations to commit acts like the beating of the two brothers who were mistaken for gay and beaten (one of them to death) in the streets like they weren't even human beings?

Do people not get that we're in a fight for our very lives? When the murderers of LGBT folk can get away with murdering us by using the "gay panic" defense, Warren and his ilk are the very reason that defense is accepted. Because according to them, we are the worst sinners and we're out to molest children and we corrupt all of society.

I'm adding a comment I made in another thread...

It seems very odd to me that anyone cannot grasp the concept of what an insult this man is to the gay community and to women.

Forced birthing, at the cost of a woman's life-- and the fact he sees gays as the worst sinners and equates us to pedophiles and incest and thinks we should be "cured" -- I don't see how anyone can condone this man being given a platform at this historic event.

It's utter fucking bullshit.

We queers are killed in the streets and straights get away with the gay panic defense. In most of the country, it is still legal to discriminate against us in employment, housing, and even medical care. Men like this preach hate from the pulpit that directly leads to the assault and murder to LGBT people. Rick Warren and his ilk are responsible for the abortion clinic bombings... outright terrorism... in the 80's and 90's.

It's a fucking disgrace and all you people spouting on about how it's not important can kiss my ass.

I guess we gay folk and women are just too emotional, huh?
