Observations from a flyby of Dione, right, the greyish moon of Saturn, suggest that it is a mature, frigid world with hints of tectonic activity.

Last week the US-European spacecraft Cassini flew within 310 miles (500km) of the moon’s surface, showing that it possessed a heavily cratered surface but no atmosphere.

Scientists compared the frozen Dione to another moon of Saturn, Enceladus, which recently was found to have active ice volcanoes.
