The stress and pressure put on their families was incredible, and would never have been done to a white athlete. Because of the pressure and hate mail and death threats, Carlos got divorced, Smith's brothers were kicked off of their high school football team and his brother in Oregon lost his scholarship. Smith's mother died of a heart attack due to the hate mail sent to her. Another example of white America's intolerance of black people standing up for and telling the truth about itself.
