WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE????????????? [View All]

Disclaimer No. 1: I’m not a writer. I’ve never been an eloquent speaker. I sometimes find my emotions run rampant and cloud my thoughts. I sometimes think I’m expressing myself clearly only to hear myself rambling and look at faces of people with raised eyebrows or worse, blank looks. But I feel the need to say or write something, anything about why I sit here almost every night in tears after reading various posts on DU and other sites.

Disclaimer No. 2: Oh and I’m Canadian.

I’ve never cared about American politics … really never cared. Intrigued by stories of the Kennedy assassinations (I wasn’t born yet), Nixon and Watergate (born, but more concerned about having Barbie marry GI Joe instead of Ken), amused by stories of Billy Carter, laughing at Chevy Chase tripping a la Ford, laughed harder when Ronald Reagan, my grandmothers favorite movie star was in the White House, shook my head at all the fuss over Bill and Monica, and scratched my head a bit when Dubya “won” over Gore. That was about the extent of my interest in American politics. Of course, that all changed on a Tuesday.

I grew up loving America. I grew up loving to hate America. I grew up criticizing America. I grew up thanking my lucky stars that we lived beside America. I grew up being jealous of America. I’m grown up now and I’m sad for America but I find myself more and more each day being afraid of America. One way or the other, America made sense. America doesn’t make sense to me anymore. Americans don’t make any sense to me anymore.

Does your Constitution mean anything anymore? Your Bill of Rights? The 4th Amendment?

Are you not all OUTRAGED? That thousands of your sons and daughters are dying in a war that is being fought for NO REASON …. That you were lied to over and over and over again by your President, your Vice President and others …. That they are telling almost exactly the same lies to get you to buy in to yet another war? That your country, the only country to every attack another country using a nuclear bomb is telling the rest of the world who it thinks should have a bomb and who shouldn’t? That your president is actually thinking that if another country doesn’t listen to your country who says they’re not allowed to have the bomb, will drop the very same kind of bomb on them to show them who is boss? That your president, the Decider, cares nothing about your civil rights, your health care, your pension, your finances, your gas tank, your privacy, your future, your children’s futures, your grandchildren’s futures?

Where is your OUTRAGE? Where are your protests? Where are the lie ins – the sit ins – the marches – the boycotts – the absolute and utter OUTRAGE? When did Americans turn into bloggers? And poll responders? And callers in to radio shows? Hey, it gets the word out, it informs and educates, it allows for venting and commiserating but is it enough? I was young in the 60s and 70s but I’ve seen the news, the pictures, my parents comments … I know there was outrage before … I know people stood up en masse … I know people marched … I know people sat. I heard the Neil Young songs.

I know there’s the Cindy Sheehans and the Ray McGoverns dotting the landscape … I know there’s a new Neil song … but where oh where is the OUTRAGE? The kind of outrage that got people off their butts and out in the street? What will it take? How many more lies? How many more will have to come home in flag draped coffins? How many more things will you find out they’ve been doing to your rights while you didn’t even know it?

What’s it going to take? 6 bucks a gallon?
