That, IMO, is the real issue in Katie Couric's hiring.

It's not so much whether she has the appropriate "journalistic" credentials or not. Perrsonally, I don't think she does, but no less thnt newsreaders like Brian Williams....But the days of Walter Cronkheit are long gone.

But Jeeez what makes these Superstar Anchors worth so damn much money? Jusat think of she had "sacrificed" to earn a crummy $1 or $2 or even $3 million, think how how many other reporters, researchers, bureaus, etc. their networks could pay for.

The ridivulous salaries shows that the problem isn't that the networks can't "afford" to do real news, or make some sacrifices of profits for the idea of public service. It's just that their priorities refloect the "Winner Take All" nature of modern life.

And it doesn't say much about the integrity of peope like Couric that they play along with it and exploit it. I don;t begrudge her the rewards of success, but fer kripe sake, why does she feel the need to grab more money than she can possibly spend at the epense of thge people she works with and the basic resources of news?
