Most snakes will only bite you if they feel threatened, like if you step on one or surprise it close up. Some species are pretty cross, though, especially some species of snakes that live around water. Those kinds you don't want to suprise at close range or they might bite. Most land constrictors like pythons and boas are pretty placid around humans and try to avoid them, although anacondas, which live around water, are ornery in general if encountered. So are water moccasins.
