3. Gak! I was living in New York when he was elected.
It's a little strange there. There is a very strong moderate Republican tradition in New York. LaGuardia, Lindsay, Koch, etc. won as Republicans. Banks, Wall Street, Corporations are strong Republican. Part of it is the strength of the Liberal Party which splits the left vote. Sometimes the Liberal Party makes a deal with the Repubs, as in Lindsay. Giuliani was strong on his rep as a federal prosecutor. Law and order was a good issue for him at a bad time for New York, and there was a backlash against Dinkins. Giuliani could not be elected there if he was perceived as a real conservative.

In any case, many cities could go either way depending local politics, personalities, timing.
