There is/was a proposal that children would only be automatic citizens IF both parents are already citizens. The "anchor" citizen has always been a facet of immigration, regardless of the nationality of the immigrants.. If you had a relative already here, it was easier to bring more family members in..

In a neo-con version, that child in the ad would have been sent back with Mom..

The hardcore answer to what we have going on is MANDATORY schools (won't happen-costs money) where immigrants are sent to learn english and get help in assimilation. The reason most never assimilate, is that they go to already established enclaves where they don't HAVE to learn english, and they rely on the resilience of the children to be their interpretors..

This would take the pressure off a lot of schools who have to hire bi-lingual. tri-lingual teachers and provide a lot of catch-up work on an already stripped budget.

Lots of Hispanic children are over-burdened,and become the de facto adults of the family.. They are the ones who can read the gas bill, deal with the landlords, talk to the doctors, and deal with the english-speaking world because their elders cannot..
