Fighting for Peace: Seven Critical Years in the Pentagon
Caspar Weinberger

From a 1990 Booknotes interview for his book "Fighting for Peace," Caspar Weinberger discusses the build-up of American arms during the time he served as secretary of defense for President Ronald Regan. Mr. Weinberger states that he feels it is essential that the U.S. retain the military strength it had in the 1980's. In the book, Mr. Weinberger states his support for the Strategic Defense Initiative. Also discussed in the book are the Iran-contra affair, President Ronald Regan, and Robert McFarlane. Mr. Weinberger died last Tuesday.

Caspar Weinberger was born in San Francisco, California. His parents were immigrants from England. He received a B.A. degree in 1938 and a Juris Doctor degree in 1941, both from Harvard University. Mr. Weinberger served as Secretary of Defense from under President Regan from 1980-1988. When he resigned as Secretary of Defense, he was placed under indictment for felony counts of lying to the Iran-Contra indepentdent counsel. Mr. Weinberger received a Presidential pardon from President George H. W. Bush on December 24, 1992. He died in Maine on March 28, 2006.
