Looking over the news of the 22-17 party-line vote to forward contempt charges on Meyers and Bolten, I was wondering, what hold does the administration still have over the Republicans?

Over an AD&D game last night we debated what the influence still was. I have three former Republicans in my game. (Now Libertarian, Indie and Democrat.) They thought that with 25% approval numbers, the Republlicans would be comitting suicide in the fall by not prosecuting the president. The view was that public opinion was now irrelevent since real POWER was concentrated in this president's hands, and more importantly, in the hands of his backers.

"So what if he is unpopular," one said. "Cross him, and you'll never work in that town again."

So what are the levers? Jobs? Campaign funds? Lobbying? Or as on player put it, "People would have to know that they supported Bush to get pissed off, and who is going to tell them that?"

:-(
