Keep on Truckin'
Is it on? Is it off? Are the independent over the road drivers going to get organized to the degree necessary to make a nationwide truckers strike a reality?
As of this morning - Wednesday, April 2 - it appears the answer is no.
A strike or a slowdown would seem to be the natural response to what a growing number of owner-operators are going through with this insane rise in fuel prices - yet another gift from the Bush Crime Family to the working class.
According to AAA, the average national diesel gas price has risen from $3.38 to $3.91 a gallon over the last month. Truckers say they've been paying over $4 per gallon for diesel out west, and over $5 per gallon in Canada. One tank will average 135 gallons. That translates to over $500.00 a fill-up. It cannot be sustained; costs like this will drive independents out of business. And, then what? What will the rest of us do when the trucks - or a large proportion of them - simply stop running, stop delivering all the stuff, including food, we depend on daily?
When fuel prices in France get too high, truckers there stop. They just pull over and stop their rigs. Or, they form miles long convoys and drive as slowly as possible. Very quickly, the French get it. In turn, they make sure their legislators get it: Lower ces prix dégoûtants immediately! Nous le voulons dire!
And what usually happens next is a lower petrol price for the truckers. The rest of the motorists in France do not bitch about this dual pricing because they realize the degree to which their lifestyle depends on truckers. Now, can you imagine such an outcome here? Please. Americans are for the most part - and you know this is true - whiney. If the truckers get a lower fuel price, why can't I? would be the complaint. The answer is obvious, of course.
So, what to do? This is a problem that must be resolved in a way that allows over-the-road drivers to continue their critical work.
Let's talk about it tonight. I think it's important.
