something some people in his inner circle might have expected, but it seemed to me at the time that he was stressed and perhaps forgot where he was for a moment.

Merkel, as was said, didn't make much of it, nor did anyone else, most likely because it was one of those silly little embarassments like farting when bowing.

(But she sure did look taken aback for a moment.)
