after all, isn't conservatism, by defination, simply refusing to do anything? Don't they want to dismantle the federal government and roll back social progress?

I mean, yes, you could describe them somewhat as "ideals", but it is laughable.

Imgagine:

"I envision a world where nothing will have changed since 1900"

"When I picture tomorrow, I try to imagine it like it was fifty years ago!"

"I will work for a government that doesn't do anything for anyone anywhere!"


Yeah, those are idealistic principles right there....
