You've seen how little time each candidate gets to answer anything with only 8 candidates on stage! Double that number, and I'm afraid you'd end up with a completely uncontrolable caotic mess. Maybe after the field narrows on both sides, there could be some kind of a competing panel discussion, but I think it would have to be reduced to no more than 3 on each side.
