55. If he is going to run, he needs to announce soon.
It's a matter of using resources well. Many of us are trying to select a candidate to support for the primaries in our states. We have to get started on their campaigns now. We need to start donating money now. The money spent on the campaigns of Gore, Obama and Edwards draw a lot of attention to the Democratic party and Democratic stances, but it won't be there for the national campaign. If Gore stepped in, many people would switch from the other three candidates to back him. But Democratic funds and energy are limited. Once committed to another candidate, the money will not be available to Gore. Gore needs to get in or announce he absolutely will not run. It is not fair to party activists to keep everyone on hold too long. I'm not saying he has to announce today. But, to be fair, he should announce for sure in or before early fall 2007. Of course, maybe his private polls show he will win the primaries even if he doesn't announce, organize or make any effort to reach individual voters and activists before the primaries take place.
