there is a mandate to clear your defensible space 100 ft from your house (not that it would help in a raging firestorm) but some of the firefighters remarked that the homes left standing in this fire had good clearing and they were thankful the homeowners did it. In my county part of which goes up to the Kings Beach area of Tahoe, they are pretty aggressive about enforcing this. The fire department makes visits and leaves you a summons. If you don't clear it as they specify you pay a fine and they keep coming back. Most people do it on their own because there is nothing more terrifying than being woken up by the smell of smoke in the middle of the night whether you live in or out of the woods.
