81. Heimat vs. Vaterland
Edited on Wed Jul-25-07 07:09 PM by kineneb
Heim: home, family, dwelling, domicile,
Heimat: native land, homeland, home, native country/region (Before Hitler often used in terms of German region, rather than the whole German state.)
Heimatland: native land/country, homeland
Heimatschuz: home defense
Heimatflughafen: home (air) base
Heimatkrieger: armchair soldier, carpet knight, stay-at-home patriot
Heimatschein: certificate of citizenship

Vater: father
Vaterland: native land, fatherland
Vaterlandsliebe: ("love of the fatherland") patriotism

Notice the different "feel" of the two words. "Heimat" nouns are more related to the physical/official/legal/military worlds, whereas "Vaterland" is more of a "warm fuzzy" word, associated with family and home country. Hitler and his propagandists saw the utility of using Heimat as part of the militarization of post WWI Germany.

Dang, I knew that deg. minor in German would be good for something...

ed for strange smilie that crept in
