A Kansas City fire truck responding to an accident scene struck and killed a first-grader this afternoon, just a block away from his school.

The boy was in the street near Ninth Street and Euclid Avenue when the fire truck hit him just before 3:40 p.m., according to a statement from the Kansas City Fire Department.

The child, an immigrant from Africa, was a student at Woodland Elementary School, 711 Woodland Avenue, Kansas City School District Spokesman Andre Riley said.

According to the fire department statement, a battalion chief, a pumper truck and another truck were dispatched at 3:34 p.m. to a motor vehicle accident at 12th Street and Chestnut Avenue. At 3:37 p.m., crew members on Pumper 10 radioed back to dispatchers that they had been involved in an injury accident at Ninth and Euclid.
