Bullies sense blood in the water, so to speak, and if the social climate (M$M) paints the picture that non-repubs are somehow 'under attack' it can lead to an escalation of various confrontations since those types love to join in a groupthink endeavor that involves singling their 'enemies' out. I'm sure they perceive it as being 'good soldiers.'

And really, it sounds as though the OP did a very good job of standing their ground, no fisticuffs necessary thankfully.
