but I haven't seen any good statistics regarding how many Americans die because of lack of medical care.

The death rate from preventable disease is heavily influenced by chronic diseases that are more prevalent due to bad lifestyle choices, e.g. obesity, smoking, drinking, drug use (including abused prescription drugs), STDs, etc.
