That was how it was handled at a recent funeral I attended.

To mention the kids, and not the mother is an insult the kids..

A man we knew died, and both wives came to the service.. the oldest son delivered that line..acknowledging both wives, without having to mention the obvious suffering that ended the first married, decades earlier..
