100. in the 80s w. piss testing the consequences of using became too great
in the 70s i would say that virtually everyone smoked pot, if only socially, to be polite, i'd rather a good glass of wine myself but to be polite, there was a lot of social pressure to smoke just to prove you weren't a narc or something

then came piss testing and suddenly it simply wasn't worth the cost just to be courteous--

normal average americans have or want to have jobs, even on DU i'd be surprised if there were THAT many "trust-afarians" who can take the risk of recreationally smoking pot

i remember when all this piss testing started, it seemed to go hand in hand w. the explosion of crack and cocaine use in my area (new orleans), pot doesn't really clear your system that quickly, whereas i'm sorry to say it but crack apparently does metabolize much more quickly, of course it causes a lot of other problems...in the early/middle 80s there was still a belief that you couldn't get addicted to cocaine, and maybe there is not a known metabolic pathway but it has become obvious that there's some kind of psychological grip that it gets on people...
