So much as shocked by your rudeness. Expressing your point of view and giving them something to think about is a great idea. Changing the subject is also acceptable. Demanding that they shut up in your presence is a good way to not get invited to any more events and reaffirm that people with your point of view are jerks.

Everybody should remember, you don't have to respect other peoples' crazy ideas, but you still have to respect them as people if you want to change their minds.
