Falluja Breaks the Back of Iraq Rebels - U.S. General (pass the koolaid)
Edited on Thu Nov-18-04 12:34 PM by maddezmom
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The ground offensive in Falluja led by U.S. Marines has "broken the back of the insurgency" in Iraq (news - web sites), disrupting rebel operations across the country, a senior U.S. commander said on Thursday.

Lt. Gen. John Sattler, commander of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Falluja, said the all-out assault on the city, which had been a safe haven for Iraqi insurgents who rose up after last year's ouster of President Saddam Hussein (news - web sites), had flushed the rebels out of their lair and scattered them.

So how come I heard on the news last night that the insurgents were slipping back in and ambushing the marines?
I suppose he has to say this, but, unless one is totally brain dead it's so obviously not true.

Don't you just luv these idiotic pronouncements? They say the have "broken the back of the insurgency" then in the next breath admit that this consists of "flushing the rebels out of their lair and scattering them." Sheesh....

14. So he claims they've been "flushed out" and "scattered"
Unless by "scattered" he means dismembered and strewn about the city in small pieces, I don't think I would call this a mission that "broke the back" of the insugency.
Then again, that may be EXACTLY what he means.

Our volunteer military was designed for attack and destroy tactics against a hostile force, not police patrols and winning the "hearts and minds" of national civilians.

We seem woefully frustrated by the insurgents unwillingness to don a uniform, buy tanks and fighter jets, and fight us as a conventional army. Have we learned NOTHING since the Viet war?

And so on.

Sometimes I wonder if they say these things to make us believe them, or if they say these things to make themselves believe them. Right now, I'm starting to think it's the latter.

21. U.S. Claims Finding Iraq Militants' Base!!! whoopdedo...al Zarqawi gone
BAGHDAD, Iraq - U.S. troops sweeping through Fallujah on Thursday said they believe they have found the main headquarters of the insurgent group headed by Jordanian terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

In video shot by an embedded CNN cameraman, soldiers walked through an imposing building with concrete columns and with a large sign in Arabic on the wall reading "Al Qaida Organization" and "There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger."

Inside the building, U.S. soldiers found documents, old computers, notebooks, photographs and copies of the Quran.

Al-Zarqawi last month renamed his group al-Qaida in Iraq (news - web sites), and his followers have been blamed for a number of deadly bombings and beheadings of foreign hostages, including three Americans and a Briton. The United States has offered a $25 million reward for his capture or killing — the same amount as for Osama bin Laden (news - web sites).

29. i'm sure its for real
obviously al qaida would put a big sign on the building announcing it as their headquarters (sarcasm)....they might as well put a bull's eye on the roof. smells to me like the same people involved with the pre-election terror tape had their hands in this one also....

31. A large sign, huh?
We had drones and planes flying over Fallujah daily in the runup for months, and we didn't notice a big fucking sign that said Al Queda on a big fucking building? We never thought about dropping a bomb or two there, but we thought it was a good idea to drop a few on civilians? What do they need, flashing neon and a giant terrorist doll on the roof waving?

26. in other news: Militant statement threatens to sabotage Iraq elections
DUBAI (AFP) - A statement posted on the website of Sunni Muslim militant group Ansar al-Sunna threatened to attack both candidates and voters in elections due to be held in Iraq (news - web sites) in January.

"We will target anyone who dares to stand in these elections because they will be considered apostates," said the statement, whose authenticity could not be independently verified.

"We announce that the Mujahedeen will attack the polling stations which are heathen places."

It was the second time a statement in the name of Iraqi insurgents had threatened efforts to wreck the promised nationwide elections.

Victory Hasn't Broken Insurgency

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,138921,00.html

The recapture of Fallujah (search) has not broken the insurgents' will to fight and may not pay the big dividend U.S. planners had hoped — to improve security enough to hold national elections in Sunni Muslim (search) areas of central Iraq, according to U.S. and Iraqi assessments.
