Italy Offers Possible Way Out of U-N Cloning Dispute

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Italy is proposing a compromise on human cloning that it hopes will settle disputes between two sharply divided camps at the United Nations. The U-N General Assembly's legal committee plans to vote on the matter tomorrow. Two different proposals are being floated. One would ban all human cloning, while the other would ban reproductive cloning but allow countries to use embryos for stem-cell and other research. Italy is now trying to modify a version of an old Belgian text in an effort to find common ground, but it's too early to tell whether it will help settle the dispute.
