Daughter of slain CIA pilot wins $87 million judgment against Castro
BY JAY WEAVER

jweaver@herald.com

A Miami-Dade Circuit judge late this afternoon awarded nearly $87 million to the daughter of a CIA pilot who was shot down during the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion and later executed by the Cuban government.

Janet Ray Weininger, of Palmetto Bay, was only 6 years old when her father, Thomas ''Pete'' Ray was killed. His body was frozen and kept in a Havana morgue for 18 years before it was shipped home to his family.

Weininger filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against Cuban President Fidel Castro, his brother Raul and the Republic of Cuba. The nonjury trial began Monday, and the Castros and their government did not have anyone appear in their defense.

This afternoon, Circuit Judge Ronald Dresnick issued his ruling, awarding Weininger $65 million in punitive damages and another $18 million as compensatory damages for pain and suffering. The judge also awarded more $3.5 million to the estate of Ray, whose daughter is the administrator and executor.

Of the Germans we executed for "invading" the US back in the 40s.

Her father was involved in the illegal invasion of a sovereign nation.

He ain't got that kind of money. Fans of Cuban cigars, you are in luck! The prices are gonna drop real soon once Castro unloads. :)

7. You and I cover this.

The money is promised from an escrow account for long distance telco fees that can't be paid to Cuba now (trading with the enemy act). Since the money can't be taken from the escrow account, it comes from you and I (with a promissory note to be repaid when normalization of US/Cuba relations occurs).

9. This is ludicrous
Suing a country for executing a spy that was captured during an invasion? Especially after all that the U.S. government has done lately, especially on the island of Cuba itself (Guantanamo). Honestly, it gets more difficult to know when you are reading the news or the Onion. The Virgin Mary grilled cheese sandwich made more sense.

11. Maybe she'll asign her claim to US gov't and they can satisfy it by...
...claiming Guantanamo Bay.
