State (TX) certifies Democrat Vo's House victory (GOP whines about count)
Edited on Fri Nov-19-04 12:33 PM by Tab
AUSTIN -- Democrat Hubert Vo officially defeated veteran Republican state Rep. Talmadge Heflin by 32 votes in the closely watched House District 149 race, the secretary of state's office announced Thursday.
...
The secretary of state's office said the canvassed vote was 20,694 for Vo and 20,662 for Heflin.
...
But Heflin's lawyer, Andy Taylor, said the extra vote "came out of thin air with no explanation why it wasn't counted earlier."

"Why does the number keeping changing?" Taylor asked. "It raises serious doubts about the accuracy of the count and underscores the importance of knowing what really happened."

12. we need them on our side here
It benefits everyone to see that our democracy has fair and accurate elections. I say bring the issue to the table, this is not a partisan issue, it time for a national discussion on electile dysfunction.

17. One TX Diebold sent to Canada for results
Posted this elsewhere on DU but see this thread about TX votes, I wanted to share it again. While this particular county is bright neon red and nothing done would have changed the outcome, just the thought of a memory card or machine going outside the US should be enough to make people get concerned, IMHO. I wonder if any others have left the country and who the hell accompanied the hardware??

Election snafu points up problems for all-electronic voting

For seven days, a paperless voting machine sat mute. It refused to tell Collin County elections officials and observers what votes it had recorded at Rose Mary Haggar Elementary School on Campbell Road.

The touch-screen machine locked up during voting Nov. 2 and was taken out of service. Election night, despite coaxing from technicians, the machine would not divulge results from 63 voters.

Officials gathered around again six days later, on Monday, but the machine wouldn't budge despite the best attempts by experts from the manufacturer, Diebold Election Systems.

They met again the following day. County elections officials reported they had sent the machine's memory card to Diebold laboratories in Canada so technicians there could attempt to extract the numbers. They reported that attempts were successful and that the results were finally in.

4. Yeah
I am glad that the election results have stood up for now. There is a procedure for Talmadge to request that the house review the election but the worst that can happen is a new election.

5. They are so concerned about the accuracy of the count-
only when they are losing. If they are ahead, everything went "smoothly".

6. He has over stayed anyway. but look what was done.. 11 terms? overturned
Talmadge Heflinis serving in his 11th term as State Representative from Harris County District 149 (parts of Alief, west Houston, and Katy). Before that, he was elected to an unexpired term, and then two full terms, on the Board of Trustees for the Alief Independent School District.
A longtime legislative leader on budget and taxes -- and in several sessions, the only member of the House on both the Appropriations and Ways & Means committees -- Mr. Heflin was named Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee by Speaker Tom Craddick at the beginning of the 78th Legislature in 2003. He has also appeared on numerous panel discussions throughout the state on both our budget and our tax system, and has authored budget pieces for the Texas Lyceum Association and the Texas Public Policy Foundation.

By virtue of his Appropriations chairmanship, Mr. Heflin is also a member of the Legislative Budget Board and the Legislative Audit Committee. Speaker Craddick has also named Mr. Heflin to the Select Committee on Public School Finance.

Mr. Heflin is a past chairman of the Harris County Legislative Delegation, a past president of the Texas Conservative Coalition, a member of numerous local civic organizations, serves as a deacon at First Baptist Church Alief, and is a member of the board of the West Houston Medical Center. He is also the namesake of Talmadge L. Heflin Elementary School in Alief, opened in 1982 in honor of his service to Alief ISD.

13. There were many reports of "glitches" in the Texas election....
But most of the "glitches" occurred to favor repukes in federal positions...house, senate, president. People who were pressing the screen for Kerry, would have bush show up as the choice...a LOT of this happened in Austin, Texas.

I have a feeling that Dems would have made a MUCH better showing in Texas if we had had a fair election.

14. This is a travesty!
All that work done to rig the vote with redistricting, keeping minority voters from the polls, and flat out electronic and personal fraud is out the window. Do we democrats have no shame? It used to be in this country that when you rigged an election, the election stayed rigged. Now we communist liberals want to make all the votes actually count. It's un-American!
