MTV Censors Eminem's Performance At European Awards

Multi-platinum rapper Eminem was reportedly banned from executing his parody of pop icon Michael Jackson for a performance at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Rome Thursday (November 18).

The Detroit rapper had allegedly arranged to dress as Jackson, wearing a wig and a fake nosepiece, to perform his single “Just Lose It” off his album Encore in the Tor di Valle hippodrome where the award show took place.

Upon observing Eminem’s rehearsal the previous mourning, according to reports, MTV executives instructed Eminem to alter his routine sans the Jackson charade, insisting that it would cause humiliation and controversy.

"Bosses stepped in when it became clear he was going overboard,” a source told Britain's The Sun newspaper. "He wanted to rub Jackson's nose in his child molestation charges in front of a TV audience of millions.”

The rapper agreed to MTV’s demand, but he did reportedly bring 40 children onto the stage to perform his anti-war single “Mosh.”

Children in fatigues marched around while Eminem performed the highly political song.

Eminem has already received backlash over his recent “Just Lose It” video, which features him as Jackson on a bed with kids jumping around, mocking Jackson’s current child molestation charges.

In related news, Atlanta duo OutKast picked up three MTV awards for the evening, including Best Group, Best Song and Video for their hit “Hey Ya!”

The eccentric Andre 3000 told the crowd in his acceptance speech, "I hope you don't get tired of us. We only do what we do.”

Eminem's rap group D12 also won the Best Hip-Hop award at the show.

Eminem’s latest album Encore was released Friday (November 19) and claimed the number one spot on the Billboard Charts, selling over 700,000 units in just three days.

1. Michael can grab his crotch while surrounded by kids and that's ok
Edited on Sat Nov-20-04 01:15 PM by khephra
But don't you dare hint that something else might be going on. Gee, it's not like the guy hasn't admitted to liking it when he sleeps with kids that aren't his in the same bed with him.

BAD Eminem! Didn't you realize Michael was an untouchable Saint on MTV?

2. I still don't think Michael even understands it all.
That when he says "sleep" with kids other people think he means "**sleep**" with kids.

Maybe I really do pity the fool. (/Mr. T)

4. It's actually pretty funny in a warped way
On MTV you can sing anti-Bush or anti-war songs--saying things about politics that you can't on real news shows--but don't you dare make any negative or satirical statements about Michael Jackson!

Boy, if only that was our problem with the rest of the media.

7. Perhaps MTV is a little gun-shy after its "Feces in the Face is Fun" act..
"MTV apologizes after teens sue SANTA MONICA (AP) --

MTV apologized Thursday to two 14-year-old girls who said they were splattered with feces when an act defecated on stage during a taping of the music channel's "Dude, This Sucks" show.

"This is a terrible incident. It was unintended and we regret that it happened," Brian Graden, the cable channel's president for programming, said in a statement. He added that the episode would never be aired and that he had taken steps to see that such an event never happens again.

"We are sorry if these women were hurt. It is certainly never our intention to hurt anyone," he said. Graden said the network had just learned that the girls are suing MTV, adding that the company "will respond accordingly through the legal process."

The teen-agers said they were standing next to a stage on Jan. 21 at the Snow Summit Ski Resort in the San Bernardino Mountains east of Los Angeles, watching a two-man act called Shower Rangers during videotaping of a "Snowed In" segment of the MTV show.

"Without warning or explanation the two Shower Rangers turned their backsides to the audience, both opened a flap on the back of their shorts, exposing their naked buttocks," the girls' attorney Gloria Allred said.

"Before they could say or do anything, the Shower Ranger whose buttocks faced them bent over, spread the cheeks of his buttocks and emitted a spray of fecal matter," the lawyer said.

3. Good point Keph
Its all about the money. Michael Jackson still sells a ton of his old stuff. The record cos and MTV, Tower records etc. have to keep the corporate sales moving.

6. "insisting that it would cause humiliation and controversy."
Hmmm, if you eliminated "controversy" from Eminem's song list, there wouldn't be much left.

I would much rather see him do the "Mosh" song anyway.

10. Jarvis Cocker waggles his bum at Michael Jackson at the 1996 Brit Awards
The Brit Awards, 1996. Michael Jackson, dressed in white and bathed in celestial light, is healing poverty-stricken children onstage. At least, that's the idea behind the ludicrous stage show for the megastar's turgid 'Earth Song' - everyone at home just sees one man's grotesque delusions and some stage-school brats. By the time Jackson "blesses" an actor portraying a rabbi, "ludicrous" has become plain offensive.

Luckily for the nation, there was a man on the inside - Pulp's Jarvis Cocker, enjoying a post-'Common People' popularity wave that meant he could have walked into any British household and successfully demanded tea and sexual favours. Appalled by Jackson's self-aggrandisement, Jarvis leapt onstage, pretended to flash his skinnily iconic arse, had a dance, then sat back down. It was only at the aftershow party that he was asked to accompany police to the station, accused of assaulting child performers. The country awoke to breakfast news telling them that their adorably camp hero was actually a child-walloping thug. Of course, it quickly became apparent Jarvis had been deliberately maligned. "I do not go onstage and start shovelling kids over barriers because that's not my style," he announced, with characteristic flair.

A huge show of public support followed. The contrast was clear: Jackson was out of touch, humourless and artistically bankrupt; Jarvis, leader of the common people, was reckless, righteous and did what every viewer would have done. It was a shining example of how great pop stars possess an innate sense of what is expected of them. Jarvis Cocker, in all his arse-waggling glory, was never going to be Jesus Christ. But at least he had the right initials.
