OMAHA, Neb. - Marine Lance Cpl. Shane Kielion was killed in action in Iraq (news - web sites) not knowing that his first child had been born just hours before.

April Kielion, the Marine's widow and high school sweetheart, gave birth to a boy in Omaha on Monday, said Kielion's old high school football coach, Jay Ball.


"She's hanging in there," Ball said. "She's a strong woman. She's got a terrific family and lots of supportive friends."

"He was excited about his baby on the way and he always told me how beautiful his wife was," Ball told KMTV News in Omaha.

Shane Kielion

Shane Kielion married his high school sweetheart last year. His wife, April, had their first child, a son, Monday.

Father and son will never meet. Kielion died Monday in combat in Iraq. A family friend thought the Marine corporal died in Fallujah, which would make him the second Nebraskan to die in the intense battle for control of the Iraqi city. He was the first Omahan to die in combat in Iraq. Family members declined immediate comment.

Kielion graduated from Omaha South High School in 1999, where as quarterback his senior year he led a team that snapped an 11-game losing streak and made the Class A playoffs. He attended Peru State College briefly on a football scholarship.

His coach at South High, Jay Bell, said Kielion became a Marine to provide a better life for his family. Kielion, on leave from Iraq, stopped by a practice in August. He was proud of being a South graduate and proud of being a Marine, Bell said. "His last words to me were, 'Coach, I'm going back to Falluja.
