LIMA, Peru (Reuters) - Mining companies in Peru on Friday called on the government to put an end to the violent anti-mining protests that have scuppered a major gold project and threaten to freeze another after a mining camp was attacked this week.
"We urge the government and regional leaders to reestablish their authority to prevent the actions of violent groups spreading," said Carlos Santa Cruz, vice president of the National Society of Mining, Petroleum and Energy, which represents mining companies in Peru.
"We are very worried because there seems to be a systematic campaign (by protesters) to attack private investment and mining investment in particular, to paralyze the mining sector," Santa Cruz, also a senior executive of U.S.-based Newmont Mining Co. (NEM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) , told CPN Radio.
