Intelligence Overhaul Deal Falls Through

WASHINGTON - Congress on Saturday failed in its attempt to get legislation addressing the Sept. 11 Commission's terror-fighting recommendations to President Bush (news - web sites), but Republican leaders said they would try to press the effort later this year.

House Majority Leader Tom Delay said "Our members want us to continue, the speaker wants us to continue to negotiate and so does the Senate, so we're going to continue to negotiate and see if we can get a bill in December."

However chance are unlikely if the House and Senate both leave Washington and end their post-election session.

Delay said that Reps. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., and James Sensenbrenner, R-Wisc., had not agreed to a compromise reached earlier Saturday and he wanted their approval before the House moved forward.

4. I'm not surprised. Anybody else here surprised?
Didn't think so.

This Congressional dog-and-pony show is becoming the laughingstock of the world.

5. I'm not surprised
Having the various agencies FUBAR is important for "plausible deniability."

6. Saw Hastert on TV
said that "some provisions of the bill would jeapordize our troops in the field"..... :wtf:

IMO they are trying to put a happy face on the fact that their is a war going on within the Repub party.....the hardcores support Rummy and won't bend on intelligence reform...

btw: I'm not so sure the intelligence overhaul bill is a real good idea anyway but I'm fascinated by what appears to be a major brawl in teh Repub ranks.

8. Pelosi has a great new line
"Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the White House, and the blame for this failure is theirs alone," added House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California.
