CBS Refuses to Pay Fine

The chief executive at CBS, Leslie Moonves, said yesterday that the company, a unit of Viacom, would not pay a $550,000 fine levied by the Federal Communications Commission for a Super Bowl halftime broadcast in which singer Janet Jackson's breast was bared.

The agency imposed the maximum $27,500 penalty against each of the 20 CBS-owned stations that broadcast the Super Bowl.

If the F.C.C. stands by the penalty, CBS could appeal to a federal appeals court.

"Mr Crocodile Tears" did it AGAIN in California, got busted and yet he is STILL ON TV. Lately, he's been openly advocating killing ALL Muslims. Yep. I saw and heard him, live on TV about a month ago, telling his congregation that we should "kill them all."

Sumner Redstone backed off with the TANG documents--which still may very well be photocopies of authentic memos--and called off untimely 60 Minutes stories on the trumped-up lies that led us into Iraq and lame-ass cheapness on the subject of body armor and other equipment.

He even went so far as to point out in Japan that although he considered himself a Democrat, he felt the Republicans were more helpful for his business, so he'd be voting for Bush.

If he thinks he can fight now, he's nuts. If he thinks his appeasement will give him the good graces of the administration and the FCC to increase his media holdings, he's delusional.

Dealing with the Bush Mob is like dealing with the Hell's Angels, and Hunter Thompson got it right lo these many years ago: if you pull a gun, you'd better use it, because if you don't, they'll kill you. I don't mean that they'd literally off Redstone, but they WILL put every roadblock in his way, put the screws on in every way possible, and bring him to heel.

He's seriously bungled every turn in the maneuvering over the last 6 months, and that spells trouble for us all.

More of a mensch than I thought. I hope Dave talks about it next week if he talks to Les on the phone.

They fine Howard Stern, too, for indecency. Where is the indecency fine for Rush Limbaugh for spouting hatred every single day? Where is the fine for Faux Spews lying every single day about John Kerry's record? Where is the fine for the very indecent, hateful Ann Coulter?

A boob shot is not a big deal to me. Neither is a naked back on Monday Night Football at 9 PM. They showed Dennis Franz's bare ass at 10 pm and that was ok.

This all pales in comparison to the daily onslaught of hate speech by the right wing nuts in this country who rule the airways. When is THEIR fine coming? Bare bodies are a NATURAL form of being. Hate speech is not, it is abhorrent and damaging to the country.

Hubby and I were in the room, the set was on, we were awake and watching and totally missed the damn thing. Had to catch it on the endless replays. Drudge was kind enough to post a pic of the original boob in all its glory, much better than the pixelated boob we were forced to watch on the replays. I'm outraged that it was the event of the year and we managed to miss it.

but I've been really impressed with CBS's programming lately.
"Joan of Arcadia" had a plot line 2--3 weeks about the morality of outing a fellow student Joan had found out was gay. (She didn't.)
"Cold Case Files" last Sunday was about what seemed to be an early hate crime, the early days of the "gay flu" that eventually became known as AIDS. It ended with a present-day gay wedding that was beautifully portrayed. (I cried.)
Thursday night CSI was about the death of a transgendered person during reassignment surgery. Since this is a bewildering subject for many people, I thought they did shed light on some misconceptions.
More than anything, all the shows stressed that people with different lifestyles are deserving of the respect all people deserve.

They need to know when they inspire people :)
