Tax Disclosure Buried in Spending Bill
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 7:41 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Congress debated legislation Saturday giving two committee chairman and their assistants access to income tax returns without regard to privacy protections, but not before red-faced Republicans said it was all a mistake and would be swiftly repealed.

``This is a serious situation,'' said Senate Appropriations Committee chairman Ted Stevens, R-Alaska. He said he was unaware of the provision, inserted into a 3,300-page spending bill covering most federal agencies and programs.

Questioned sharply by fellow Republicans as well as Democrats, Stevens pleaded with the Senate to approve the overall spending bill.

Stevens promised a resolution repealing that provision relating to tax returns. He said House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., had agreed to have the resolution passed when the House returns Dec. 6.

In the meantime, he said, President Bush intends to issue a statement declaring that the section of law will be disregarded.

26. another repuke ambush????bushit , bushit and more fkn bushit.
i can't believe dems fell for this. are they really this supid? no wonder the nazis stole the electioon. even if they do take it out which conceivably they might not, the delete will now have to pass the house. and we all know what wonderful folks are running things over there.. ye gads this is a very dangerous farce and the dems had no right taking such a chance. somebody put it in in the middle of the night along with new legislation stripping women of important rights to get an abortion even in cases of rape and incest, hoping nobody would notice in the 3300 page page turner though everybody is disclaiming responsibility. the repukes just can't understand how this could have happened even though they locked out the dems in the process. how much more civil rights giveaways are tucked into this remarkable and unreadable document. this is just more fkn nazi bushit. everyone needs to write or call their senators and congressment to protest. this is what happens when 17% percent of the population controll all branches of government.

2. If that section of the law is to be disregarded, take it out!
There are a lot of tax returns which are processed by contracted corporations. Those corporations send their work to be done in India. Betcha a dollar this was put in to protect them and the IRS from lawsuits for violating privacy of tax payers

For fun and high blood pressure, google:
outsourcing tax return processing

This little item is another bit to protect corporations while hanging the citizens out to dry.

3. They also put in a provision that allows corporations to file law suits
against the U.S. to get big bucks?????

http://www.taxpayer.net/chapter11/

Sounds pretty logical: Allow corps to sue the U.S. for things they fully intend to do.....WTF?

4. It would be very interesting to know just who is this
"one staffer" who holds so much influence, and just whose staff that person is on.

snip>

Stevens, who repeatedly apologized for the error, took offense at Conrad's statement. In a reference to House Republican leaders, he said it was included in the bill after ``a representation was made by one staffer that the front office in the other body wanted it.''

We need to know who this person is that lied to Stevens' staff in order to put a totally evil and un-American provision into law.

10. BINGO! You just won the jackpot.
Someone on the Senate floor made reference to a "district attorney."

I didn't watch it, this is my memory from reading another DU thread as it was happening.

DeLay hates environmentalists, and Stevens is gung-ho for ANWR drilling. It isn't hard to connect the dots with these dipwads.

18. Very old tactic
Elizabeth I of England would hear the Spanish ambassador's rants about her sea dogs robbing Spanish ships full of gold plundered from the new world. She'd act all upset etc. Then, when the Spanish left, it was high fives all around cause she got big slices of the booty.

Sounds a lot like the Rethugs.

16. the press reports it as "an error" or a "gaffe"
a provision doesn't just slip itself into legislation - IT GETS PLACED THERE... they are only "red-faced" because those who knew it got put in got caught - and those who didn't know, but should have... (like Stevens) show that they are no longer running their committees but are being run (eg they are now puppets of delay, rove and company.)

25. good to hear
that some spin is so outrageous that the press doesn't completely fall for it.

Now if only they would give some direct coverage of bush's new tax reform plan.... the one that provides more avenues for sheltering money (for those with enough money to shelter) and pays for it by taking away the deductable for local taxes paid AND the corporate tax incentive to provide health insurance. I would PAY to hear each repub on the sunday shows be asked "during the campaign you (or the president) stated a priority was lowering the number of uninsured americans; why are you promoting a policy that would greatly incresse the number of uninsured?

32. Appeasement and Chamberlain are not an option!! ...
This is the time for all good people of the United States to stand up and be counted. No more "deals"! No more "tack on Amendments" to legislation. Pass the legislation which is "directly" relevant to the perceived need to do so! The "trickle down" theory of totalitarianism needs to be confronted by those who have received our votes to legislate for the good of all people in this country; not just those who have been "programmed" by the genius of Rove and the CONSERVATIVE media. Hillary....you should be ashamed of yourself; as well as those who couldn't find it in them to "hold the line".

DON'T pass legislation without at least reading it!!!!

This democracy does not require a time limit for the close scrutiny of Congressional actions which are NOT in the broad based interests of the American people and the security of this nation.

This NOW! This is not 2006, nor is it 2008, or any other even number year. TAKE YOUR STAND....NOW!

Isn't that just fucking GREAT????

Ugh. This is bullshit. 3,000 page long bill that no one has read because no one CAN read the whole thing. No one even really knows everything that's in it...and we've already shown how bad the stuff that we ARE aware of is.

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
