Pulitzer Inc. may sell off company
Edited on Mon Nov-22-04 01:40 PM by AllegroRondo
Pulitzer Inc. has hired an investment bank to explore "strategic alternatives," including the sale of the company.

Pulitzer, which has headquarters in St. Louis, owns 14 daily newspapers and more than 65 weekly papers, shoppers and specialty publications.

The sale of Pulitzer could be the biggest deal in the newspaper business since Gannett Co. bought Central Newspapers Inc., owner of the Arizona Republic and Indianapolis Star, for $2.6 billion in 2000.

Industry analysts have labeled Gannett a leading candidate to acquire Pulitzer because the two companies' operations would complement each other in several key markets.

Gannett owns KSDK-TV (Channel 5) in St. Louis and has a joint newspaper operation with Pulitzer in Tucson, Ariz.

Although Tribune is still working to digest the Times Mirror properties, Gannett has continued on its buying binge.

On Friday, it announced a deal for HomeTown Communications, a chain of more than 60 small newspapers.
