Congress to Take Steps to Keep Govt Open (Dems Not Signing Emergency Bill)
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats, angry that Republicans rushed through a massive spending bill that would allow lawmakers access to individuals' tax returns, retaliated on Tuesday by refusing to sign off on an emergency bill needed to keep the government running after Dec. 3.

Congress on Wednesday will vote on a separate short-term funding measure that will keep the government open until the tax measure can be corrected in December.

Congressional leaders had hoped to resolve the flap over the tax return provision with a House vote on Wednesday to repeal the tax provision. The Senate had already passed it and most senators had left Washington for the Thanksgiving Day holiday.

Congress then would have sent President Bush for his signature a $388 billion spending bill they passed on Saturday that covers foreign aid and many domestic programs for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2005.

12. Well,,. The Republicans now hold:

The Presidency
The Senate
The House
A Majority on the SC
A Majority of the Governerships

So i would guess that showing a spine worked OK for the Repubs.
Clearly, the appeasement strategy of the Dems for the last 4 years hasn't worked.

I would rather go down with guns firing than whimpering in fear.

14. Newt Gingrich probably has more power in U.S. gov't than any Dem today!
That's how it worked for him.

Anyone who talks about a "backlash" against the impeachment needs to take a closer look at what the Republicans were doing. They lost a few soldiers but won the war with their strategy.

We need to have some elected "soldiers" who are willing to go down for the cause.

Look how fucking Daschle went down - grovelling instead of fighting. When a Republican loses, he goes down doing as much damage as possible. Daschle went down kissing Bush's ass to the last second.

Republicans have a strategy to win in the long run. We have no strategy and a bunch of cowards unwilling to take a risk with their job to make the world a better place.

Gingrich probably regrets nothing.

19. a first
the first time i replying to my own post.

it was a little too terse and without explanation, something that happens when you spend a lot of time pissed and less time thinking.

my point was that i want a strategy for resistance, not just a flare-up of constitutional indigestion. How many of these folks now holding press conferences voted for the Patriot Act without a whimper and without reading it- but the threshhold for them, the line in the sand is whether Ernie Istook (who may not even be literate( can read my tax return?

as for Gingrich, he spent a lotta years in the wilderness after leading the revolution. his power is in my mind purely a result of corporate suppport and the ten year ascendancy of the republican party- otherwise, he's be hawking his book at Borders and looking for new secretaries and desks to hump them on.

don't think the circumstances make the man? Why doesn't Gary Hart have the voice and stage of Newtie? He's ten times as smart, a better writer, and has been working behind the scenes to fight terrorism since he left office. George Mitchell? Bill Bradley? Even Sam Nunn? These guys are without a corporate platform (i.e. think tank), so they have to work for a living. They also lack a stage furnished by an organized and ascendent party on which to speak.

i try not to confuse the times with the people.

it'll happen to the pugs, too. they've marginalized the only elements of their party that you could remotely consider statesmen- (sorry for the archaic term)- Lugar, even McCain, even Spector.

i am sorry that i didn't take the time to do anything but smartass the thread lead.

2. The fascists shot themselves in the foot with their little nazi rider.
Now the Dems are going to very slowly and very carefully read every piece of fascist legislation that comes down the pipe, and it all better be clear of hidden little nazi tidbits or there may be a four year quorum busting walkout in the House and Senate.

11. 3,000 pages in 3 hours
The income tax return access was not as harrowing for me as the fact that the process of decision making is still quite disorganized and mishandled. (Although both turn the stomach.)

You can bet Levin and Stabenow are on board. They wouldn't sign that spending bill either.

Go Dems! Give them hell and make us proud!

8. Empty article.
No substance. No facts. No depth. No meaning.

Worse piece of crap "news",...well,...maybe merely a comparative piece of reporting over the last several years.

All hype,...no context, no substance, no nobility or integrity.

Who cares?

"Just Me" and the rest of the human race.

17. Can someone explain to me....
Is the tax returns the only thing they are debating on at this point? There were a shit load of things in bill. I've been trying to keep them all straight....

We have the abortion issue (ethical dilemma)
Increasing the h1b visa cap
An amendment to require parental permission on mental health screening (I think the amendment defeated. However, I think there were some elements)
Overtime amendment (I think left out because * threatened veto)

26. They had something like 6 hours
to read 3500 double sided pages or 7000 pages to go through. There were nine bills altogether. Seven of those nine had never been to the Senate floor for debate and a vote. How much can anybody read and comprehend of this congressional gobley gook & legalese in 6 hours?
