Powell: U.S. Open to Eventually Restoring Ties with Iran

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt (Reuters) - Outgoing Secretary of State Colin Powell signaled on Tuesday Washington was open to one day re-establishing diplomatic ties with Iran after the countries held their most sustained, high-level contact in years.

Powell, who spoke with his Iranian counterpart on Monday at an international conference dinner, said the United States could "in due course" hold direct talks and review relations if Tehran addressed concerns over its terrorism links and nuclear programs.

The remarks were sure to fuel speculation over the prospects for a thaw in relations as the administration of President Bush debates whether to engage or confront a country it bracketed in "an axis of evil" with North Korea and pre-war Iraq.

Asked if the United States could one day consider restoring ties with Iran, Powell, a sometimes lonesome dove in Bush's cabinet, said: "In due course."

more...Oh, OK. So this is what an axis of evil who actually DOES have nukes gets.

Before Powell became a lame duck he was most useful to dumbya and crew as a fall guy at the U.N. hearings. Why should anyone pay attention to what he says now?

We know so we can't attack them. The Bushies "ALLOWED" this to happen.

I am afraid of the "End-Times" folks having power, I am afraid they may make Armageddon a self-fulfilling prophecy, and I believe the bushies are letting it happen. This is what happens when religious zealots get power. We must do everything under our control to frustrate the Cultic (not Christian) mission. These freaks want the end of the world. GET IT??? Remember, we have numerous instances in our country of cults committing mass suicide in anticipation of the "End Times". They are "prepping" their troops for awfulness. Who is left standing?

Who has bunkers? I don't believe bush is an end timer, but I do believe he has a bunker. That way, they don't have to deal with the social security issue.

Other than that, his foreign policy makes no sense. And just in case you are wondering where all the uncivility in sports is coming from, look to the Prez, he attacks the weak without provocation. Why the hell should anyone else be civil? I don't subscribe to any of this and hope I am dead wrong, but from what I see THIS IS NOT AMERICA!!!

Not for the next 4 years, folks. We are the Sick Man of the world right now: our economic, political and social institutions are dead or dying, our strengths have all turned to weaknesses, and the arrogance just keeps on running strong.

How long before we are carved up, just as the Ottoman Empire was in WWI, the British Empire in WWII?
