Conservatives outraged as Hollywood talks about sex
LOS ANGELES (AFP) - American conservative groups are outraged over a new film starring Liam Neeson about controversial sex researcher Alfred Kinsey whom they accuse of being a closet pornographer.

The release of "Kinsey" 50 years after the publication of "Sexual Behaviour in the Human Male" and "Sexual Behaviour in the Human Female" has cast a new spotlight on America's sexual revolution, while the film has earned critical praise despite the controversy.

Conservative Christians and family groups have picketed cinemas in New York, Los Angeles and other cities since the film, directed by Bill Condon, came out at the start of November.

37. And consider the reactions from the latest two news controversies:
There's a LOT more foaming at the mouth over Nicollette Sheridan's towel-dropping than there has been over the NBA "basketbrawl." And do we see any fundies standing up to denounce that shameful eruption of violence? Anybody? Mr. Falwell? Mr. Robertson? Hello? Focus on the Family? Anybody there?

3. If the righties are so afraid of sex
how do they ever procreate? There is only one way to make babies, and I think we all know what that is. I have an idea for a movie! How about two righties meeting, falling in love, discussing having children, and failing because they don't have a clue how to go about it with their clothes on while sleeping in separate beds. It could be rated "S" for stupidity.

5. You will love "A Boy and His Dog"
with a very young Don Johnson, from a story by Harlan Ellison. It is a story about a post nuclear war US, where all of the wingnuts live underground and have built the perfect society along the lines of a Jerry Falwell vision. All of the men are infertile so they capture the "top dwellers" that are able to survive on the surface and extract sperm from them. They hold wedding cermonies with the bride and a vial of sperm.

18. "artsem"
1984 Ch. 6:

The aim of the Party was not merely to prevent men and women from forming loyalties which it might not be able to control. Its real, undeclared purpose was to remove all pleasure from the sexual act. Not love so much as eroticism was the enemy, inside marriage as well as outside it. All marriages between Party members had to be approved by a committee appointed for the purpose, and -- though the principle was never clearly stated -- permission was always refused if the couple concerned gave the impression of being physically attracted to one another. The only recognized purpose of marriage was to beget children for the service of the Party. Sexual intercourse was to be looked on as a slightly disgusting minor operation, like having an enema. This again was never put into plain words, but in an indirect way it was rubbed into every Party member from childhood onwards. There were even organizations such as the Junior Anti-Sex League, which advocated complete celibacy for both sexes. All children were to be begotten by artificial insemination (artsem, it was called in Newspeak) and brought up in public institutions. This, Winston was aware, was not meant altogether seriously, but somehow it fitted in with the general ideology of the Party. The Party was trying to kill the sex instinct, or, if it could not be killed, then to distort it and dirty it. He did not know why this was so, but it seemed natural that it should be so. And as far as the women were concerned, the Party's efforts were largely successful.

29. According to the movie, that's why Kinsey started his research...
It's advice {Director} Condon takes to heart as he introduces us to Kinsey on the campus of Indiana University, where he teaches a class about the mating habits of the gall wasp. Among his students is Clara "Mac" McMillen (Laura Linney), who fancies the professor but believes him "too churchy." Theirs is a cool courtship that culminates in wedding-night lovemaking more akin to wrestling than sex. Watching the pain on her face, and the humiliation on his, is almost too much to bear, but Condon doesn't pull back or grimace or, yes, even judge.

It is, after all, a seminal moment in Kinsey's life and career, as he decides the only reason he and Mac are lousy at love is because no one taught them how to do it right. They've been the victims of "morality masquerading as fact," he tells her, referring to a course in abstinence and fear offered by Professor Thurman Rice (Frank-N-Furter himself, Tim Curry, in a bit of brilliant casting).

www.sfweekly.com/issues/2004-11-17/film/film2.html

Politics aside, the movie's gotten excellent reviews. When it finally opens in Houston, I'll be glad to support the filmmakers. Not that it's any hardship to watch Liam Neeson in action. And--Tim Curry teaching a course on "abstinence and fear"--yow!

33. I think a lot of the outrage ...
... about this movie comes from it's debunking the myth of the traditional family of the 1950's. Kinsey did his research and produced his report in the 1950's. Even then, 1 in 6 farm boys admitted to having sex with one or more farm animals. The R's want to believe that the 60's and 70's destroyed some mythical "family values," but how can that be if people were as "perverted" in the 50's as they are now?

That's what this uproar is about. Kinsey effectively debunks a cherished right-wing myth.

50. the only thing that was destroyed
was the veil of secrecy, which they conveniently named 'decency', that they could hide behind. It was 'indecent' to speak about such matters before the 80's talk shows brought it all out in the open for everyone to see. Never mind that the victim had no say so in being victimized--in fact, 'blame the victim' was the rule of the day.

Before that, people could get away with raping and torturing children because there was an effective machine in place that would shame the victim by making them feel that is was their fault all along and that they deserved what happened to them because they were 'bad'. There was never any effort to place the blame on the perpetrator... no one got up in the perp's face to shame him or to call him out on his behavior.

The Christians who rave against movies and Hollywood and liberals couldn't survive without a bogey man. Who would they blame for all the ills of society. the patriarchy going. When you have war and violence as dominant themes it usually means male status is rising and female status is falling.
