Marine went into battle wounded
By MARK HAYWARD

11/24/04

The former Timberlane student who died as a Marine in Fallujah Friday had been injured about a week earlier and was still limping when he returned to battle, his mother said yesterday.

Lance Cpl. Dimitri Gavriel had shrapnel throughout his leg, said Penelope Gavriel from her Haverhill, Mass., home. A Marine buddy of her son had relayed the information to his own mother, who spoke to Mrs. Gavriel yesterday...

Gavriel, 29, a state heavyweight wrestling champion at Timberlane Regional High School in Plaistow, grew up in Atkinson.

His tragic death and the uplifting elements of his life — a son of immigrants, Ivy League student, a Wall Street worker who decided to join the Marines after the collapse of the World Trade Center towers — has prompted a flood of news reporters to his parent's house.

Mrs. Gavriel said she has spoken to a half-dozen television stations, newspaper reporters, Greek television and National Public Radio.

1. why didn't you include this paragraph?
Edited on Wed Nov-24-04 09:43 AM by Kire
It was mysteriously cut from your post without a <snip> in between the other paragraphs.

"It was something that he didn't have to do. He could have very well stayed in bed and nursed his wounds. He was limping, but he felt well enough to go," Mrs. Gavriel said. "The psychological state and the training of these men is unbelievable, probably beyond logic. That is why they are heroes."

it seems the mainstream press is spinning this into how courageous he is to go into battle wounded

What I want to know is if the wound affected his performance on the battle field, and the name of his commanding officer who approved all this.

4. "The psychological state and training of these men is
unbelievable, probably beyond logic." The new American Kamikaze: pathetic and frightening.

5. Sometimes I just do not have sympathy. Mrs. Gavriel is an
idiot! What in the hell is wrong with people like her. Why do they feel that they cannot do anything to protest this war. It's like a Hollywood version of WWII.
