General Who Ran Prisons Gets Pentagon Job (Maj. Gen. Geoffrey D. Miller)
WASHINGTON -- The two-star Army general who ran the U.S. military prison for terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and later took over the U.S. military prison system in Iraq has been reassigned to a senior staff job in the Pentagon.

Maj. Gen. Geoffrey D. Miller will be the Army's assistant chief of staff for installation management, with responsibility for the housing, environmental and other support operations at Army bases.

Miller ran Guantanamo Bay from October 2002 to March 2004 and has been credited by senior Pentagon officials with improving the amount of useful intelligence gleaned from terror suspects held there.

In August 2003, Miller was sent to Iraq to provide advice on the screening of detainees, their interrogations and the collection of intelligence. Among his recommendations was that military police be actively involved in "setting the conditions" for successful interrogations.

1. OK, I think I figured it out.
The more incompetent, the more brutal, the further you will go in the bush junta.

7. That's truly revolting.
I'm aware that high-level military promotions are political, but must we promote the human rights abusers simply because they follow orders without questioning them? Just like Gonzales as Attorney General. Condone the torture and you get the job. I wonder who the American Mengele will be?

Depressing ...

8. Most dems still don't understand abu ghraib
The torture scandal HELPED bush by making him look like a tough guy who'll do anything to win in iraq and hell with the rights of the arabs. That's the way most americans look at it and the bush gang understands that.

Democrats could have won this issue if they had come out swinging and called bush a pervert and traitor whose torture of enemy POWs means that captured american GIs will get the same treatment. But they didn't use that angle, of course. Instead they cried about the suffering iraqis which was morally right but politically stupid.

12. I think you're right
Dems never wanted to be accused of politicizing it...or ANYTHING. I don't understand that. Even now, with this promotion, they could make the argument you formed. But they won't.

9. The reason he promotes these incompetents s/b obvious
They are obeying orders and Bush values loyalty above competence. Plus, as long as they have a paying job and a way to land a lucrative private sector job when they are out of office, they won't squeal on him. That's all he cares about. That's why only the "little guys" are being called to account, to give the "appearance" they are responding to the evil horrors they created! They are on plan.
