Yanukovich formally announced winner of Ukraine's elections (it's official

KIEV, Nov. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- Ukraine's Central Election Commissionon Wednesday declared Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich winner of the presidential elections.

Commission head Serhiy Kivalov said Yanukovich has won 49.46 percent of the vote while his disgruntled rival Viktor Yushchenko 46.61 percent.

Yanukovich said he would try to promote living standards and was ready to talk with the opposition.

"We must improve our lives and we will do it together ... Tomorrow, we start stalks with Yushchenko's team. We will look forcommon ground."

Yushchenko refused to concede, claiming there was brazen fraud in the elections and calling for a nationwide strike.

I can't help feeling that whichever way this turns out, Ukraine will be the loser.

4. "Across the country"?

Methinks what'll happen is that a lot of the people in the East and South are going to go to work as usual. Unsurprisingly, we don't hear much from these parts of the country in the news here, since it's all protests, all day. Amazing what a little media manipulation can do, no?

admit widespread fraud. What nobody can know for certain is who won. I can see no other solution than repeating the election, after extensive negotiations (and pressure) on how to prevent fraud, and sending not just tens or hundreds of observers, but an army of them, thousands.

With violence, everybody looses.
