Automatic recount commences Monday (Alabama)
Automatic recount commences Monday
Thursday, November 25, 2004

News staff writer
MONTGOMERY - Alabama voters rejected a proposal to strip Jim Crow language from the state constitution by just 1,850 votes, triggering a statewide recount that will begin Monday, Secretary of State Nancy Worley said.
(snip)

As expected, Amendment 2, which would strip segregation-era language from the constitution, failed by 0.13 percent of the vote. The narrow margin triggers the first statewide use of Alabama's new automatic recount law. The law kicks in if the vote difference is less than one-half of 1 percentage point.
(snip)

County election officials will unseal ballot boxes Monday and run ballots back through voting machines, Worley said. Most counties can complete the recount Monday, but some might take a few days, she said.

The proposed amendment would have removed language that required segregated public schools and said poll taxes would be used to fund them. Courts struck down the provisions long ago, but the language remained in Alabama's constitution.

1. Dumb Red-Staters

Keeping Jim Crow language in the Alabama Constitution is just as useless, and as inflammatory, as a Confederate flag!

7. When you say dumb red-staters
I guess you are calling everyone in the state dumb? And the people who voted for it are also dumb? Give it a rest.

5. yes you are right
look at the log cabin republicans. the difference is they were hated and reviled in the concentration camps and called uncle toms in the past. now its just let it ride. we have grown to complacent having never lived under a dictatorship like for instance the ukrain's who have the guts to fight back because they know what it means.

6. The reason the bill lost
"Some legislators have promised to reintroduce the measure in the regular session of the Legislature, but to remove language that would have left the door open for possible tax increases."

I believe a bill introduced with only the racist language being removed will pass.
