Somalia-born supermodel and best-selling author Waris Dirie, who has campaigned to end the disfiguring practice she suffered at age 5 in her homeland, said she estimates one in every three African families living in Europe is secretly carrying out the ritual on daughters born here. No official figures exist.

The procedure — illegal in most European countries — is especially prevalent in Germany and the Netherlands, as well as in Austria, where an estimated 8,000 girls born into immigrant families have been affected, Dirie said.

"We don't know who's doing it and where," because there are few initiatives to prevent it or to encourage doctors, nurses, social workers, teachers and others to report suspected cases, Dirie said. An exception is France, where there is strong awareness and education, she said.

Now, you may say that's an outrageous statement. But don't you really think they would do it if they could? Why wouldn't Falwell and Robertson want to deny women an orgasm?

There was a story here on DU a year or so ago about some high school kid that had a website that, among other similarly outrageous things, said if a woman had sex and had an orgasm it was a sin. This belief is out there. The next step is assure women don't have an orgasm and pave their way to heaven.

In England, etc. Back when "women are not suppose to enjoy sex" days. It was seen as a way to help women and their emotion issues, etc. Even women all ready married were given this procedure to "help." The exuse wasn't so much the enjoyment for women. But it caused all sorts of "dishumors" that it should be removed. It was considered like the appendex. Aghm..

They remove the clitoris, it is the equivalent of removing the glans on the penis. Many also sew the labia major together to be opened by a knife at marriage. Many girls die from infection.
